ABOUT NANCY WRIGHT

WHY I CARE ABOUT MEDICAID HOME AND COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICES

I have been a member of the Florida Bar since 1980 after graduating with high honors from Florida State University College of Law. I worked in environmental law for a while, then paused to raise three very kind and witty children with my kind and witty husband.

Returning to law as a legal aid attorney, I stumbled onto Medicaid while working on a small regional grant project. The project turned into an urgent statewide effort to defend children and adults with developmental disabilities from massive reductions in Medicaid services. I served hundreds of clients, coordinated advocates across the state, and was involved in litigation in multiple forums, including administrative hearings, rule challenges, state court appeals and federal lawsuits. Since then, I have dedicated my practice to support the choice of people who are disabled or elderly to live safely in their own homes or community rather than in an institution.

I am inspired every day by the courage and grace of my clients and their caregivers, by the passion and drive of my fellow advocates, and even by the willingness of my adversaries to listen and help when given the opportunity.

OTHER THINGS I CARE ABOUT

Spreading the word - I’ve loved giving presentations and trainings to attorneys, providers, caregivers and advocacy groups on all types of Medicaid HCBS, guardian advocacy, fair hearings, and special education.

Listening to lives lived - In my tradition, bearing witness to the burdens and joys of others is a form of healing. I hope that I can tell these stories in a way that helps others to see the need for change.

Taking time to be with family, friends, and the great outdoors.
